Republicans Promise Prosperity ?
The GOP unleashed their counter-policy to President Obama's Affordable Care Act(ACA) with a "Project for Prosperity". It promises as Speaker Boehner says "real cuts", $6.2 Billion in cuts to be exact for 2012. Medicare which represents a single payer form of healthcare for the elderly will see a face lift...a very very tight face lift. While on the surface the savings being explained will help the pocketbook of the public agency , but maybe not exactly your pocketbook.Watch for costs of medical services and for prescriptions to go.
The GOP plan would not become a single payer provider of healthcare, but rather allow for several private insurers to compete for providing you coverage. The theory is to reduce overspending of healthcare cost. But, concerns have already begun to look at how this impacts retirees and the impoverished. This policy would not effect immediately but would begin to take place for those who qualify ten years from now.
But, already the GOPs $200 Billion plan to overturn ACA has already begun to take some small victories in the wake of the federal government being shutdown.Remember there are at least 26 states who are filing a law suit about the constitutionality of ACA as well as the U.S. Supreme Court preparing to hear the arguments of this case very soon.
Where both sides fail at understanding what keeps healthcare sustainable is maintaining health.Politicians have not looked at the studies from both the corporate world and academic world at Wellness and Prevention. The "culture of wellness" or healthcare promotion has been a method steeped in prevention as its primary motive. Even though, prevention is only one vital aspect to this when it is fashioned into a program along with regular fitness, nutritional support, behavior modification/motivation, and prevention education, individuals can act a a safety gate through personal responsibility for their own health , rather than state agencies like in Arizona.
Wellness and Health Promotions studies by corporations and industry show that health promotions not only allow for savings to be obtained , but provided improved health of workers along with better productivity of the company meaning a better bottomline. Wellness as a program, more so than a policy, can create a sustainable healthcare system by not allowing us to bury our heads in the sand of healthcare spending by always chasing our tail . This approach recognizes that focusing merely on acute and chronic care is only half the healthcare solution. Prevention allows us to get at the problem from the beginning to end.
Corporations and industries see that these types of programs not only tightens the budget, but provides more productivity. This type of program assures a more productive national labor force, a secure GDP for national budgets, and a sustainable health program that is inexpensive.Unless families, communities, students , and companies are educated in prevention and provided this valuable option , we miss the "real coverage" of healthcare altogether....Prevention!
