Obesity Becomes A "Bigger Political" Issue

Image
Governor Chris Christie's new look has only been mentioned a few times in the media, but it is taking a notice to those who not only follow his campaign , but are followers of his once profound size. This size wasn't just his "big" impact on politics , but the Governor's obesity issue. Back in the fall of 2012 the Governor could be seen stomping around making political speeches, winded, out of breath and even hunched over with coat in arm as he sweated to the next media stop. Soon political pundits that were critical of the governor's political views become more critical of whether an "obese" man could be taken seriously as a presidential candidate and other high offices. Some articles viewed him as a caricature of a politician rather than be taken seriously .Gov. Chris Christie became a target on some late night t.v. talk shows because of his girth as well the affect it appeared to be disabling him toward an effective governorship. Well in late M...

Soft Drink Contains Carcinogens

In 1984 both the Coca-Cola Company , the makers of the soft drink Coke and PepsiCo, the makers of Pepsi decided to change the formulation of their beverages in an ongoing bitter rivalry for the number one spot. The change was to stop using table sugar(sucralose) as the primary sweetner for its taste and use what they thought was a more economically feasible and "healthier" choice with High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFCS). The taste was noted by Americans almost immediately and the reaction in Europe was that they didn't want HFCS in their beverages because of its health concerns. This small change launched a geo-political and nutritional "war" that affected the globalization of products in the international markets.Europeans began to either ban or boycott Pepsi and Coke because of HFCS for its cause of obesity. The result of this is that Coke and Pepsi do not sell their products with HFCS in Europe. Fast forward to the USA today. Environmental groups have held the ...

More Physicians Gravitate Towards "Boutique/Concierge Medicine

Have you noticed more and more medical doctors on television and radio and not just on talk shows, but with introducing their own privately labelled products ,wellness centers and spas? Doctors have taken a page out of commercial marketing that was once considered taboo amongst many elite circles. But, today physicians are grabbing at the opportunity and the opening possibilities to take their practices into another stratosphere. Since the early 80's physicians began to see their autonomy seep from their grips as more DRGs and HMOs began to take command and control of a multi-billion dollar industry(the medical industrial complex), once known as their profession. Overlooked by health policy, managed care and rising liability costs, physicians have had to "re-invent" themselves and perhaps even the art of medicine. Medical doctors with a business degree were once rarely seen, and much more so were those who were marketing their books, their own pharmaceutical products a...

Is Coke The Real Thing?

Image
The flurry of media outlets scurrying about with the headlines , press releases and t.v. commercials still fresh in mind of the public that Coca-Cola Company will be applying a new beverage advertisement policy. The new policy will affect the 35 percent of its business consumership made up of under twelve years of age in an attempt to reduce childhood obesity. Coke, which it is famously known as, promises to help reduce childhood obesity by ceasing all ads directed to kids below the age of 12 especially in locations they mostly utilize.Coke also promises to add calorie count labels on all products as well. This new policy also includes producing more low to zero calorie beverages, such as the "mini-can" and Zero Water. Coke even plans to help create activity and sports oriented programs for children in its policies. On the surface these all sound good and sound like a rather ambitious agenda for the multi-billion dollar super corporation to be undertaking. But, even with ...

Going at It From a Different Angle

Healthcare has been approached in America as a means of treating a multiplicity of diseases that apparently have no common link in diagnosis or treatment. It has been the accepted standard of care for clinicians to treat a disease through multi-subspecialties. Managed care has promted this through the development of multiple codes that consists of a variety of attached prices fixed to a certain disease. Cosde match deisgnated diagnosis and therapies to the costs . This approach has seen the soaring cosst of medical treatment , devices , diagnostics , administrative waste and duplicity. It may have contributed to over-diagnosis, misdiagnosis , phanthom diagnosis as well as the defensive legal reflex of clinicians called CYA (cover your rear) in response to medial liability sanctions. But, what if the major medical diseases were all related to a key central disease that exists at epidemic proportions, not only that, but what if this central disease was treated or addressed as a first...

Newer Link Between Throat Cancer and Obesity

Scientist from both Massachusetts General Hospital and the Dana Faber have published a new study in the science journal Nature supporting a link between obesity, high acidity in the throat and throat cancer. This lead the team to looking at the portion of the lower "swallowing tube" (esophagus) that connects directly to the stomach. The tissue appears like in glandular tissue and cancers rising there are called Adenocarcinoma. This cancer appears to be different in the fact it is not so much associated with smoking tobacco products or drinking alcohol as it does with cancers from the upper section of the throat. Instead high acid production makes changes in the throat. Scientist have noted that there is a DNA difference as well as anatomical difference in these cells. At the junction where the esophagus meets the stomach exists a sphincter that tightens to block reflux of the stomach's acid back into the throat. The high level of abdominal fat onto this region may push ...

The Healthcare Tsunami: Ripples to Waves

The Society of Actuaries(SOA), the premiere, accontant professional assoiciation that oversees the nation's shifts of insurance costs has come out with a very serious report that can affect every American who does or does not possess healthcare insurance in one forn or another. You better do your own homework on this. By their estimation there will be an increased rise in overall healthcare costs across the board on an average of 32 % in the USA . California will be increased by 62 %, both Wisconsin and Ohio will see a rise of 80 %. While currently Ohio and Wisconsin are low individual cost, the new healthcare policy will have to move their costs up to that level of other states that have higher costs such as New York and Massachusetts to level the playing field of healthcare costs. This will cause the policy and claims costs of New York and Massachusetts to therefore go down. This very pragmatic approach to healthcare calls for states to expend Medicaid costs as well into the mil...
